STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Gérard Depardieu is granted Russian citizenship by Vladimir Putin
  • Matthew Fraser: Depardieu is not the only one who wants to escape France's income taxes
  • He says the French are suspicious of money and hostile toward the wealthy
  • Fraser: Depardieu's choice to become a Russian citizen is seen as a rejection of France

(CNN) -- When Gérard Depardieu triggered a fiscal feud with the French government a few weeks ago, the media had fun recasting him in his movie role as the comic book character Obélix, a fat and superhumanly strong Gaulois who stands up to the Romans.
Now that the French movie star has abandoned the land of the Gauls to become a Russian citizen, his recent film role as the mad monk Rasputin is being evoked to put a cinematic image on a bizarre real-life drama that has become an affair of state.
Depardieu's "defection" to Russia has both amused and angered his compatriots. The actor has not helped matters with his puzzling public statements. Depardieu, whose father was a communist, praised Russia as a "great democracy," a description open to some debate given that country's history.

The survey results were striking as it was discovered that citizens of the poorest countries were the happiest. The list of the happiest countries was topped by El Salvador, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Trinidad and Tobago. What is the secret of Hispanic happiness? Specialists of the Gallup Institute released data from a study conducted back in 2011. Experts conducted a survey in 148 countries around the world to find out in which countries people were more likely to experience positive emotions. People were interviewed in person and on the phone, and each person was asked five questions, all about the ways they spent the previous day. Social scientists asked whether the respondents felt joy, whether they felt rested, and how often they laughed and smiled. In addition, the researchers asked whether their interviewees felt respected by their peers, as well as whether they learned something new the day before. According to the Gallup, the happiest people on the planet were the citizens of El Salvador, Panama and Paraguay. These three countries were the "happiest". The top ten included 7 countries in Latin America - in addition to the above, Venezuela, Ecuador, Guatemala and Costa Rica made the list. Russia, however, did not even make it to the top one hundred of the happiest countries, occupying one of the lowest spots (along with Iran and Algeria). Print version Font Size Send to friend First place in the ranking was occupied by a small equatorial country in Latin America - Panama, whose population is only 3.4 million people (according to 2010 census). However, despite the relatively small size of the country and small population, the standard of living in the country is relatively high. According to the studies, the birth rate in the country is 20 per thousand - 96th place among other countries. The mortality rate is low at about 4.5 people per 1000. http://english.pravda.ru/society/stories/02-01-2013/123363-poor_happy-0/ The world's most powerful people propaganda 16.01.2013 Pages: 123 By Ivan Simic Every year we have the opportunity to read Forbes "the World's Most Powerful People" list which is showing us who, by Forbes opinion, is the most powerful in the world. However, as years goes by this list is becoming more of a comic story then the reality. Somehow Forbes cannot accept the reality that there is no definition or criteria to determine the most powerful person in the world. What Forbes does is they measure power of an individual along four dimensions: Whether the candidate has power over lots of people, assess the financial resources controlled by each person, determine if the candidate is powerful in multiple spheres, and make sure that the candidates actively used their power. When Forbes uses the word "Powerful" what exactly does it means? According to a definition there are many meanings of powerful, such as; having or capable of exerting power, having great power or force or potency or effect, displaying superhuman strength or power, among others. However, no definition gives an example of the most powerful person, especially with the prefix "most". Print version Font Size Send to friend According to a definition of the word "World", there is no precise meaning of the word "World". World is the universe, the planet earth, the earth with its inhabitants, the human race, among others. In custom, world is a common name for the whole of the life on the planet, specifically human civilization, experience, history, or the human condition in general. If we are to consider having most powerful person in the world, that person must be in the position to control and influence Biota (the superdomain that classifies all life) on the planet earth, as well as beyond the earth.
