Volkswagen recalls 384,000 cars from China

Volkswagen has recalled nearly 400,000 vehicles in China back to factories due to ongoing gearbox problems. The move is the manufacturer's biggest product recall in its primary market to date.

Starting April 2nd, VW plans to replace malfunctioning parts and update gearbox software in 384,000 vehicles around China, a company spokesman said on Wednesday.
The recall was prompted by complaints from the country's quality control department AQSIQ over the weekend, which in turn subjected the company to criticism by state media channels.
VW announced the move shortly afterwards, emphasising that the decision had been made "of its own accord."
Affected are cars produced in China and a number of imported models, including Bora, Golf, Audi A3, Passat Touran, Octavia and Scirocco. The company had been aware of the issue for some time, having previously extended its gearbox guarantee.
Volkswagen is currently the second-largest foreign carmaker in China. Of 9.1 million cars sold globally in 2012, the company's best year to date, 2.8 million were sold in China.
Company chairman Martin Winterkorn announced plans this month to substantially expand operations in its biggest market.
