Asia'a gambling capital is now the world's gambling capital. And a whole lot more

Having long ago left Vegas in its gambling wake, Macau is reaching for the sky. It just might get there.

Asia’s Vegas? Not anymore.

These days, it’s more accurate to call Vegas America’s Macau.

After all, it’s been five years -- 2007, if you’re into counting numbers -- since the former sleepy fishing port of Macau surpassed Las Vegas as the world leader in gambling revenue.

Still, the former Portuguese colony doesn’t have the glam image of other gambling capitals.

To compensate for its somewhat dowdy reputation, Macau has responded in recent years by building ever-bigger, ever-shinier hotels and casinos.

But the best of Macau isn’t all about risk and renovation. 

Like Vegas, Macau has added slick, family-friendly shows to its arsenal of attractions. Favorites include Cirque du Soleil’s “ZAIA,” the dancing-acrobatics-special-effects monster “House of Dancing Water” and concerts by the likes of Beyoncé.

Facebook signs up to voluntary privacy code

Facebook said Thursday it would sign up to a voluntary code of conduct in Germany to protect user data, the first time the site has agreed to such measures in a nation known for vehemently protecting the privacy of its citizens.

"We support this initiative towards self-regulation," said the social networkingsite's director of European public policy, Richard Allan, after a meeting with German Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich.

"It can be a very effective way to protect the interests of internet users," added Allan.

Self-regulation is "especially important in the fast-moving domain of the internet," said Friedrich in a statement.

Facebook has repeatedly come under fire in Germany, where privacy is a particularly sensitive issue for historical reasons.

Last month, a data protection official in Schleswig-Holstein declare Facebook's ubiquitous ‘like’ button in violation of privacy laws. Thilo Weichert said websites in the northern German had to remove the ‘like’ button from their offerings by the end of September or face a fine of up to €50,000.

It was not immediately clear if the deal on Thursday would pre-empt such penalties.

Consumer Affairs Minister Ilse Aigner threatened last year to cancel herFacebook account in protest at what she said was the website's reluctance to make its privacy settings comply with German law. But Facebook is not the only technology firm to run foul of Germans' concerns about data protection.

Google was forced to delay rolling out its Street View 3D-mapping service to allow residents to block out their homes from public view.

With Thursday's deal, Germany and Facebook appeared to have buried the hatchet.

"With Facebook's willingness to sign up for this self-regulation ... the debate over the extent to which German data protection law applies to Facebook has been considerably defused," the Interior Ministry said.
