Swedish companies are responsible and reliable and make good-quality products. That’s what many people who have done business with Sweden say. And such appraisals matter. According to market analysts, they may matter even more tomorrow.
In 2007 Sweden became the first country in the world to demand from its state-owned enterprises to report on their sustainability efforts. The then Minister of Enterprise, Maud Olofsson, explained the reason for introducing the guidelines: ‘It is essential that the state-owned companies should set an example.’ This was a breakthrough for Swedish CSR work.
What is CSR?
CSR stipulates that companies should not merely maximise profits, but seek economic growth in a socially and environmentally sustainable way. It is increasingly seen as a business imperative as much as a moral principle, and the global network of auditing and advisory, KPMG, reported in 2011 that 95 per cent of the 250 largest companies in the world report on their CSR activities.
Swedish CSR work is based on international conventions and guidelines such as ILO’s core conventions, the UN’s Global Compact and the OECD’s guidelines for multinational enterprises. Combined with a tradition of strong emphasis on human rights and progressive labour laws, this has provided Swedish actors with a good framework for pursuing CSR work.
And the roots of Swedish CSR work go back a long way.
Swedish CSR pioneer
Lovisa Curman, CSR advisor at Sandvik, a Swedish multinational producer of stainless steels and other materials, highlights the company’s long history of CSR. ‘Sandvik began working with CSR in 1862,’ she says, referring to the pioneering work of the founder of Sandvik, Göran Fredrik Göransson.
