initi� S n t `p� @X� e Compendium on Economic Governance in the Arab World 2011 is being released at a time of transformative shifts in the region and fundamental changes at the global level. While working to support countries undergoing large-scale transformations, the Arab world is also a full stakeholder in meeting the challenge of rebalancing and deleveraging the global economy.
This new context necessitates new models of economic governance which will serve the needs of 21st century global economies and increasingly engaged populations. It is also a moment of great opportunity for the region to enhance the conditions for quality growth and human development.
This compendium is a direct response to these developments and aims to surface novel thinking and innovative approaches. It draws on the unique expertise of members of the Regional Agenda Council on the Arab World who have contributed original essays. These essays cover the following topics: ensuring macro-economic stability for the region; addressing the challenge of youth employment; building of trust in public life; accountability; understanding new political paradigms and opportunities for enhancing regional cooperation; securing a strong middle class; and supporting economies in
